American Empire Duncan Phyfe Arm Chair

This is a very elegant chair that I came across recently. As you can see the overall condition was good though the upholstery and in fact the entire chair frame was incredibly grubby and nasty.

As I began to inspect the chair I came across an interesting 'repair'. The top of the leg had split and the solution was to drill a 1/4" hole and place a nut and bolt through to hold it in place!

Another shot of the bolt repair. And a good look at the general grubbiness of the finish.

Another problem I found was the break in the back splat, which was closed and unseen until I took the chair apart.

Here is the back/leg split being glued back into place. To complete I inserted a hardwood dowel through the bolt hole and covered a stain/paint mixture to hide.

As these photos show, the joints on on side in particular were loose, though there were no splits or breakage. Clamp time!

Here is the repaired chair after the original finish had been cleaned and brightened.

Another shot of the cleaned finish.

Here is the chair after being completed with new, clean (and more appropriate) upholstery.
