Caned Victorian Side Chair in Mahogany

An absolutely beautiful old chair that came in looking somewhat....peculiar. Can you see why?

And no, I don't mean the knee hole thru the cane, that was why the client brought the chair in to the shop.

That's right! It is missing a rung on the front closest to the floor.

Upon closer inspection, I determined that the rung had been broken many years ago as there was a nice, even coat of wax over the remaining ends. I drilled these left over pieces out and tidied up the holes for re-use.

The chair was solid as a rock and needed no tightening of any joints. Here is the newly turned replacement rung being glued into place.

The photo above and below show the early stages of color-matching the new rung to the old finish. This came take several attempts unless you get lucky.

Getting closer! The original finish was a not-quite-brown but not-quite-red finish that I matched with amber shellac tinted with a small amount of stain.

As you can see, it was extremely glossy!

Like I said above, but nearly there!

Now for the cane. The old cane and spline cleaned out nicely. There were no cracks or splits in the groove so I got to work.

Almost done. New cane and spline installed and waiting for it to dry and tighten.

The finished chair ready for the client to take it back home. As you can see, I lightly darkened the cane to blend in better with the original finish which needed only a light cleaning and polish.
