Antique Oak Sideboard: Restoration of Stain Damage

As you can see, this nice old gentleman suffered some serious stain damage during this past winter. That was actually good for the restoration process since it was recent. It it usually a very different story when the stain is years old.

The owner didn't know what exactly caused the stain. But as you can see it was Black and had eaten through the finish.

Another, slightly old Batman TV show shot of the damaged top.

I stripped the top twice with good old Reliable 1980 (unfortunately no longer available that I know of) followed by some judicious sanding with a slow speed random orbit.

Now we're getting somewhere! The stain has almost disappeared with only a faint 'ghost' remaining.

I decided to proceed with the stain and a single coat of lacquer to see how much of the stain would disappear.

As you can see from the photo above, it has nearly vanished. After 20 years in the biz, I can tell you from experience that this almost never happens!

After the final lacquer coats and cleaning and reviving of the original, and very dry, finish of the carcass, drawers and doors...

it shines like the pants of a blue serge suit! (with apologies to Groucho Marx)

The customer was very happy when we delivered and I blush to tell you that it now resides in a place of honor in their home.
